i spent a lot of time in graduate school reading barthes (and bachelard, derrida, and foucault for that matter) but my thesis advisor, knowing my penchant for list making, clued me into barthes’ j’aime/je n’aime pas list, the act of autoportrait or self-portrait as a way of learning about oneself being central to my research. i love doing these types of lists because depending upon the day, your mood, etc. the contents of the lists can shift slightly or drastically. my journals are peppered with these lists and i find it intriguing to thumb through and note which elements carried over for several lists. so today, in the spirit of barthes, a list:
cracking the top layer of a crème brûlée with my spoon, lavender, cardamom, nag champa, rainy days, the feel of small hands in mine, cherries, sushi, red clogs, old jeans, moleskines, my favorite pens, the sound of bacon sizzling in my great grandmother’s cast iron skillet in the morning, my hands wrapped around a mug of hot coffee, road trips, clothes drying on the line, the scent of sweet olive on the breeze, segovia in the evening with wine, grey, whales, the sea, miles davis, moroccan food.
i don’t like:
doubt, family reunions, humidity, crawfish, children’s movies, yippy yappy little dogs, roaches, mosquitoes, snakes, ice cream trucks nor their jangly music, iceberg lettuce, popcorn, camouflage, manicured lawns, buffets (as in all-you-can-eat, not the piece of furniture), poison ivy, the three stooges, playing cards, milk chocolate, musicals (except this).
your turn. leave me a like | dislike in the comments or if you post your list on your blog, please let me know!
